Western University was founded as a university by sub-decree on 17 November 2003 by its owner, Mr. Te Laurent and he also established Western International School earlier in the same year. In 2005 with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, Western University branch was estaplished in Kampong Cham Province in 2005.

The University is continually fortifying its executive management and academic processes to enable it to deliver high quality education in accordance with the human resource developments that Cambodia needs for its long term development goal. To this end, it has embarked on a program to further improve the quality of its teaching education to reach international standards.

The University is fully Accredited by the Accreditation Committee of Cambodia. Its academic standards are accepted by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.

Western University is in of cooperation with UNITAR (Universiti Tun Abdul Razak) in the Malaysia and the transfer credits from the University are accepted abroad.
