English program
will prepare students for the
arts of English literatures as
well as for their academic
studies at the university level.
Students will possess an ability
to read and write well, to think
critically and analytically, and
to reason abstractly in this
complex world of human
interaction. Throughout the
year, students will be exposed
to English literatures such as
drama, short stories, novels,
poetry, and essays writing.
English courses are available in
all grades from 1 to 12.
Credits: 5 each
Prerequisite: 50% in previous
course level or pass the English
level test
English 1
Students will
learn to develop repertoires of
skills and strategies to use as
they anticipate, predict, and
confirm meaning while reading,
viewing, and listening. Students
will demonstrate an
understanding of the conventions
of print, including how letter
sounds make words, left to right
movement in reading, and
spacing, ask questions as an aid
to understanding when reading,
listening, or viewing. In this
grade, students will also learn
to predict unknown words by
using picture clues, their
knowledge of language patterns,
and letter-sound relationships.
English 2 and English 3
Grade 2
students will be taught to
identify connections between
their own ideas, experiences,
and knowledge and a variety of
literary and mass media works
created by classroom, local and
international authors, and
developers from various cultural
communities.
It is expected
that students will:

share information about
their favourite authors and
materials.

demonstrate enjoyment of
literature and mass media
works by independently
choosing from a range of
materials.

topics from a variety of
literature and mass media
works that are of personal

English 4
Students will
learn to apply their knowledge
of the conventions of language
and use appropriate vocabulary
to talk about them. Students
will use grammatically correct
language when writing and
speaking, including consistent
verb tenses and correct pronoun
references.
Here, students
will also learn to write
legibly, using personal styles
of cursive script that are
consistent in alignment, shape,
slant, and spacing. The
conventional spelling of
frequently used words will also
be our focus.
English 5
Grade 5
students will enhance the
precision, clarity, and artistry
of their communications by using
processes that professional
authors and presenters use to
appraise and improve their
communications. It is expected
that students will:

correct their own and
others' use of grammar,
spelling, and punctuation
using both electronic and
manual means
English 6
Students will
learn to demonstrate their
understanding of and abilities
to use a variety of forms and
styles of communication that are
relevant to specific purposes
and audiences. Students will
demonstrate pride and
satisfaction in using language
to express their thoughts,
ideas, and feelings in various
written, oral, visual, and
electronic forms. Students will
also learn to create various
personal and transactional
communications, including real
and invented narratives, poems
or lyrics, summaries or
retellings, descriptions,
letters, informal oral
presentations, charts, and
posters.
English 7
In grade 7,
students will expand their
knowledge and understanding of
the English language by
reinforcing skills in the areas
of grammar, writing, oral
expression and vocabulary. Daily
work will concentrate in the
areas of sentence and paragraph
construction for various types
of writing projects, grammar
exercises, and vocabulary
lessons.
English 8
This course is
broken down into units of study
that will reinforce the
student’s strengths and
recognize their weaknesses so
that the weaknesses can be
eliminated and the strengths can
be built upon. Among the units
covered are grammar, reading,
writing, vocabulary, and speech.
Skills in oral and written
expression, as well as those of
technology, will be expanded
through various types of writing
projects and class
presentations.
English 9
This course
focuses on three areas:
literature, grammar and
composition. Literature consists
of learning short stories,
drama, and poetry; reading to
determine theme, conflict, and
climax in literature. Grammar
and composition deal with parts
of speech and the basic
construction of sentence and
paragraphs.
English 10
The focus of
this course is on developing
writing skills through sentence
structure, writing well
developed paragraphs, and
keeping a daily journal.
Literature studies consist of
short stories, plays, poems, and
at least one full-length novel.
Writing activities are
correlated with the stories.
Class activities include
textbook exercises, discussions,
small group work, audio-visual
materials, worksheets, and note
taking.
English 11
This course is
designed for the student who is
planning to enter the work force
immediately following high
school. Basic grammar and
technical writing skills are the
focus of this curriculum with a
strong emphasis on mechanics,
usage, and composition. American
authors and literature are
examined along with contemporary
American issues and themes as
reflected in films, newspapers,
and various periodicals.
English 12
This course is
especially designed for those
seniors preparing for
graduation. Technical reading,
writing, and communication are
emphasized. Writing activities
include: letters, memos,
reports, and publications.
Communication skills related to
the work force are an important
aspect of this course.
